With “Super Tuesday Part 4” upon us, John Kasich and Ted Cruz have launched a coordinated plan to stop front-runner Donald Trump. Tuesday’s primaries will see voters in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island weighing in.
On Sunday evening, the Cruz and Kasich campaigns both announced a joint plan to divide their efforts in the remaining states and focus on defeating Donald Trump, rather than each other. Cruz will shift his efforts to Indiana, while Kasich devotes his attention to Oregon and New Mexico. The remaining states, including those voting Tuesday, are up for grabs by all three campaigns.
Pennsylvania is the heavy hitter, with 71 delegates to hand out. But Maryland, with 38 delegates, and Delaware with 16, could have effects far above their weight class. Delaware is a winner-take-all state for the Republican candidates, while Maryland is winner-take-most.
With 172 delegates to be won on Tuesday, it’s not enough to get any candidate to the sweet spot of 1,237, the number of delegates needed to clinch the party nomination and avoid a contested convention. Trump is the closest, with 844 delegates. In second place is Cruz with 543, and Kasich follows with 148.
Polls close in all five states at 8 p.m. EDT, and we’ll be updating here with the expected winners as it becomes clear. Ahead, catch up on the results from contests held so far. And be sure to check back to see which candidate emerges the winner of the day.
