Update: the results are in. Click through to see who won.
Tonight is the make-or-break moment for the two remaining Democratic candidates.
Tuesday night sees the last major round of primaries and caucuses in the 2016 primary cycle. The candidates have 806 delegates up for grabs between six states, with the biggest contests in California and New Jersey, which have 546 and 142 delegates to award, respectively. Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and South Dakota will also weigh in on the Democratic nominee tonight.
On Monday night, Hillary Clinton reportedly hit the 2,383 delegates needed to clinch the nomination, but that number includes superdelegates who have said they support Clinton, but aren’t bound to vote for her. Without superdelegates, Clinton currently stands at 1,812 delegates, 571 shy of the finish line. Opponent Bernie Sanders trails her by just under 300 delegates at 1,521.
After tonight, the only remaining contest will be in the District of Columbia, which has 45 delegates to award.
Statistics site FiveThirtyEight gives Clinton a more than 90% chance of winning the two biggest states, California and New Jersey, which would push her to an official victory. However, nothing’s over until it’s over — back in March, the same site gave Clinton a 99% chance of winning Michigan, a state which eventually went to Sanders.
Polls begin closing at 8 p.m. EDT, and we’ll be updating here with the expected winners as it becomes clear. Ahead, catch up on the results from contests held so far. And be sure to check back to see which candidate emerges the winner of the day.
