Our Editors Share Their Tried-&-True Sunday-Night Beauty Rituals

Sunday is a day of rest, which means that whatever you get up to — brunch, the park, not actually getting out of bed until well after noon — is just right. For many of us, this includes a sacred Sunday-night beauty ritual.

Blame the hypnotizing opening credits of Game of Thrones, or the fact that we've been happily ignoring email all day, but our Sundays are characterized by the internal motto "YDY" ("You do you"). What that means to each of us, however, vastly differs.

Some of our editors anoint Sunday with a soothing mask, lengthy exfoliation, or relaxing hot shower, while others take full advantage of the extra time to whittle down their weekday to-do lists. Given that today is Sunday Funday, we're sharing them all, from the practical to the pleasurable.

Ahead, indulge in our beauty editors' Sunday-night beauty rituals.

Cat Quinn, Beauty Director

"I used to have an extended 11-step Sunday-night ritual. Then, life got in the way. And so did my prone-to-clogging pores. Now I've got it down to a shorter, very effective system that works for my acneic combo skin that's beginning to show fine lines."

"This is sadly only available in France, which is why I smuggle it back when I visit Paris. The sticky mask sucks all the grime and oil out of my pores, without caking up and drying the crap out of my skin. To ration my limited supply, I alternate it with Tata Harper's Resurfacing Mask (which is also amazing)."

"After my mask, I smooth on a generous dollop of this oil. It's the only retinoid I use that softens fine lines, shrinks pimples, and leaves my skin glowy, but doesn't take off my sensitive skin in sheets. That's thanks to the chamomile and blue tansy, which give it a pretty color and soothing smell."

Sunday Riley Luna Sleeping Night Oil, $105, available at Sephora.

"To hold that oil in all night, I finish with a sleeping mask. This one feels luxurious and super-calming, and it doesn't have any active ingredients that could interfere with the retinoid."

La Prairie Skin Caviar Sleeping Mask, $330, available at La Prairie.

"I finish with a few taps of this lifting eye cream, which helps me wake up looking like I got twice the sleep that I actually did."

"I do all of the previous steps — minus the eye cream — to my neck and chest, too. Then, I treat the skin on my hands to this exfoliating serum. It makes them look so much brighter."

Megan McIntyre, Beauty Features Director

"Sunday is quite possibly my favorite day of the week. Brunch, leisurely activities, and sitting down with a glass of red wine and a pizza to watch GoT, Veep, and John Oliver. Bless you, HBO. It's also the best night for beauty — you've got time to throw on a face mask, deep-condition your hair, paint your nails, and get your Baby Foot on. Try doing that ish on a Tuesday night. Spoiler alert: Unless you're a lady of leisure, that ain't happening. What's not to love about Sunday?"

"Brow-tinting and light shaping with my girl Karen at Shen Beauty every six weeks or so is my preferred method of brow maintenance — mostly because the only requirement is that I don't touch my brows. If there are a few stragglers here and there, I whip out my handy-dandy pair of Tweezerman Mini Slant Tweezers. They're really the best on the market — they grab every hair on the first go, no matter how stubby or thin, making the hair-removal pain mildly more tolerable."

"I shower on Sunday nights (usually I'm an a.m. showerer, but at night a hot shower relaxes me — plus it means I don't have to get up early on Monday), and I always apply this oil after I hop out. I pat it into my still wet skin, pop on a cush bathrobe, and then settle in on the couch for some quality Kit Harington time."

"Ever since I cut my hair short, I've been trying to go easy on the shampoo — it makes my fine hair fluffy instead of my usual wavy. On Sundays, I practice a conditioner-only routine and I adore this one from Davines. I massage it into my ends, then rinse and revel in how perfectly waved and not-at-all fluffy my hair air-dries. And for the record, the shampoo is pretty stellar, too."

Davines Dede Conditioner, $29, available at Davines.

"If my hair is more effed up than usual, then I bring in the big guns. Much in the same way that the Davines Dede is moisturizing without being weighty, this gorgeous treatment deposits all of the nourishment with none of the greasiness. It also smells divine. I apply it to my dry hair, then hop in the shower when it's nice and steamy, wait a few minutes for it to really sink in, and then wash it out. My poor, abused hair suddenly becomes almost virgin in its softness."

"My dirty little secret: I own about 50 nail polishes and I rarely ever paint my nails. It's sad. So recently, I've been trying to stop being a bad beauty editor and start giving my neglected polishes some love. My new favorite shade, a silvery lilac with champagne shimmer, clearly understands my struggle. It's part of Deborah Lippmann's new Gel Pro collection, which goes on with the shine and longevity of salon gels. I get a full week's wear out of it, which means by the time the next Sunday rolls around, I'm ready and excited to get my at-home mani on."

"Boscia has really cornered the peel-off mask market, and this one is a new favorite. The brightening benefits are great for someone like me who's battling post-acne red marks. It's a leave-on mask — no washing it off — so it's perfect for pre-bedtime primping. Important note: Make sure you put this puppy on thick. Too thin, and you wind up annoyed and frustrated as you futilely scrape off teeny-tiny little strings of putty-textured mask."

"These sticky strips are so ingrained in our collective beauty culture that it's hard to find anyone who hasn't tried them. It's an oldie but a goodie that remains one of my top beauty products of all time. Who doesn't love ripping off those suckers and being both fascinated and grossed out by seeing what was lurking in their pores? Let's just say I've got what looks like the Manhattan skyline chilling in my nose pores. The new charcoal ones have the benefit of extra pore-purging power, which those of us with stubborn pore gunk desperately need. I do these every Sunday night without fail — it gives me that weird clean-slate sense of accomplishment that puts me in a productive Monday state of mind."

Lexy Lebsack, West Coast Beauty Editor

" Man, I love Sundays. I normally spend my favorite day brunching in the park with my friends and our dog gang (we all have dogs, they're a pack, you get it), and then head home just in time to start my beauty routine and turn on HBO. My regime is super-practical (a hair treatment, self-tanner to make it look like I wasn't wearing SPF 50 at said park), but also incredibly soothing (a face mask followed by a long shower is always in the mix)."

"I have a lot of hair, but my strands are very fine, which means that most deep conditioners just end up weighing my locks down. I also bleach it, so it can be very dry. The solution is a weekly pre-shampoo mask, and this is, by far, my favorite. It has to sit on hair for at least an hour, so I start here first. I warm a ping pong-ball sized amount in my hands, fully coat my strands from a few inches off my scalp to the ends, pop on a hotel shower cap, and let it do its thing."

Christophe Robin Moisturizing Hair Oil with Lavender, $47, available at Sephora.

"Once I have my hair mask on, it's time to apply my favorite self-tanner — but not without a good scrub first. This Tatcha formula is dreamy thanks to its divine smell and gentle texture. I massage a palmful into damp skin, rinse off quickly, and pat dry. It takes no time at all and makes my skin so soft."

"For me, the goal of self-tanner isn't to look tan, per se, but rather to give my skin a light glow while hiding imperfections like bruises, scars, or veins on my legs and arms. (We all have 'em, just sayin'.) However, I refuse to sleep in the disgusting scent that comes with all self-tanner. This is the solution. I pop on the mitt (don't skip this step, or your hands will be orange come morning), blend the foam over dry skin, buff any lines with a bit of everyday lotion, then put on sweats and let it process while I watch TV or make dinner."

St. Tropez Self Tan Express Advanced Bronzing Mousse, $44, available at Ulta.

"Once my hair mask and self-tanner have chilled for at least an hour or two, I wash my face and pop this mask on for about 10 minutes. I have waxed poetic about this formula ad nauseam because it's that great. It makes my skin bright, clear, and soft. Next up: a hot shower. BRB."

"I do all the usual things after a long, relaxing shower: a bit of whatever body oil is in my bathroom, some cuticle oil, and lotion to lock it all in. My face mask does a great job exfoliating away dead skin, so it's the perfect time for self-tanner. This formula has moisturizing hyaluronic acid and imparts light, believable color. I smooth a bit on, apply my regular moisturizer on top, and I'm done. I let my hair air-dry and it's time for GoT."

Taylor Bryant, Beauty News Editor

"Sunday is my day of rest. I try to chill as much as possible and get myself focused and in the zone for the week ahead. A part of that, obviously, means treating myself beauty-wise. I usually start in the early afternoon with my hair, and end with a focus on skin and an attempt to get a full eight hours of sleep."

"I rotate sheet masks on Sundays. They're super-hydrating, so they're superb in winter but also work great in the summer months. I like to keep mine in the refrigerator once the weather heats up. That way, when I apply it, it's super-refreshing (I don't have AC in my apartment). I'm loving Leaders, a Korean line with a sheet mask for basically every skin concern."

"Because I usually put off washing my hair during the week, I'm forced to do something with it once Sunday rolls around. Hair masks are the star products in my arsenal; I'm basically a certified hoarder and try a new one every week. But this one from SheaMoisture is my ride-or-die. It hydrates, nourishes, and really rehabilitates my hair even on the worst days."

"Once I slap on my mask, I put on my deep-conditioning cap and burrow in my room to avoid my roommates' inevitable teasing when they see what I'm wearing. I warm it up in the microwave, and the heat leaves my hair super-duper soft."

"If my hair really needs some extra TLC, I'll apply this overnight treatment Sunday night and then wash, cleanse, and style Monday morning. Those are rare moments, though. I'm not a morning person and try with all my might to avoid doing anything more than brushing my teeth and washing my face in the a.m. hours."

"This isn't exactly a beauty product, per se, but it definitely affects my beauty sleep so I feel like it counts. The soothing lavender-and-mandarin pillow mist helps me relax and sleep soundly. I spray it on my pillow about 15 minutes before lying down and preparing for the deepest sleep. It's the most effective cure I've found for the Sunday blues."

Maria Del Russo, Beauty Editor

"Even though I haven't been washing my hair as much since dyeing it platinum, when I do wash it, there's a whole ritual involved. I set aside Sunday as my big wash day, which involves a pre-treatment, shampooing and conditioning, and then two masks. The whole shebang takes about two or three hours, but afterwards, my hair looks and feels like a born-with-it blonde's."

"Before I even step into the shower, I douse my hair in coconut oil. Right now, I'm loving this one from Kopari. I brush the knots out of my strands, and then work this through from root to tip until it's coated. Then, I pull up my hair and let the product marinate for at least an hour. During that time, I clean my apartment, go to the gym, or run errands. The oil doesn't drip, so it just looks like I have my wet hair in a bun."

"I've been cycling through a lot of shampoos and conditioners, but this duo is my favorite for toning. Instead of being neon-purple, both are an ashy lavender, and they really brighten my hair. I rinse the oil out of my strands, lather up with the shampoo, rinse, and then follow with the conditioner."

"After cleansing, I towel-dry my hair with a microfiber towel and then work this purple goop from root to tip. There's a reason you've probably heard of Christophe Robin's mask — it's the Cadillac of toning products. I brush it through my hair, twist my strands into a bun, and let it sit for about 20 minutes before rinsing."

"After rinsing the purple mask, I squeeze as much water out of my hair as possible and then apply this mask for about five minutes. It makes my hair super-soft while strengthening it with vitamin C. Once the five minutes are up, I rinse, step out of the shower, and towel-dry one more time."

BLNDN Repair You Repairing Mask, $48, available at BLNDN.

"Once the washing and repairing is all done, I start the long process of layering my hair products before air-drying. First up is BLNDN's Save You Balancing Cream. I use two pumps in my hair, and it revives my dried-out strands."

"To finish off the whole saga, I run Hair Balm through the length of my hair. I use a lot of it — about three to four pumps — to define my curls and lend some serious texture."

Mi-Anne Chan, Beauty Editorial Assistant

"Although I'm dedicated to skin care and makeup, I'm not a huge fan of long, relaxing beauty rituals. I know this sounds really strange, but I have a really hard time relaxing even during a massage or facial. I get really bored! So my Sunday-night pampering routine usually doesn't involve too much. If anything, I'll spend a few more minutes dutifully applying my body moisturizer and perhaps whipping out a mask to wear while I watch TV or clean."

"I'm very diligent about moisturizing and treating my face and neck, but I get lazy when it comes to my body. That's why I make a point to use a really luxurious and hydrating moisturizer on Sunday nights (and throughout the week if I remember). This one by One Love Organics contains a slew of nourishing oils in a convenient spray bottle."

"I also make a point to manually exfoliate my face once a week to keep flaky, uneven skin at bay. This scrub by Juara combines physical exfoliants like jojoba and bamboo beads with chemical exfoliants like apple and cinnamon enzymes. Altogether, it's a gentle yet abrasive blend that sloughs away dead skin cells and brightens my complexion."

"After cleansing my face, I'll slap on a clarifying mask like this one to zap any budding or existing pimples. Cinnamon, argan oil, and alpine herbs work together to kill bacteria, soothe inflammation, and hydrate the skin. I've got to say, it seriously works because once I peel it off, my skin looks immediately brighter and clearer."
