SLS Las Vegas, A Tribute Portfolio Resort, Las Vegas, NV
The SLS sits toward the end of the Strip and is a modish, luxury property that will make you feel like the coolest kid at the slots. The hotel has three separate towers, each with a different feel (some rooms even have mirrors over the bed, because this is still Vegas, after all), and a hip pool with cabanas that are equip with their own TVs. When you’re hungry, check out José Andrés' experimentally minded restaurant Bazaar Meat, or sushi spot Katsuya; later on, catch a live band at The Sayers Club. It’s the sort of place that makes you feel like a high roller, even if you’re not dropping too much cash.
Rooms start at $55 per night.
House Hotel Galatasaray, Istanbul, Turkey
Located in the heart of Istanbul’s artsy Çukurcuma neighborhood, House Hotel Galatasaray is a slick budget option, offering 20 all-suite rooms. Each one is lush and stylishly sparse, with primarily white decor, marble bathrooms, and freestanding rain showers. The penthouse level restaurant and bar is a cozy spot to hang by the fireplace while enjoying insane views of Old Istanbul and the Galata Tower.
Mini suites start at $88 per night.
Brody House, Budapest, Hungary
Budapest is quickly becoming one of the must-visit cities in Europe, and though there are many hotels to choose from, we're fans of the boutique Brody House. There are 11 unique rooms filled with funky, shabby-chic decor (think old wooden doors and distressed wallpaper), high ceilings, and vintage colors galore. Your stay includes access to Brody House’s members-only areas and events, and the hotel will also arrange for in-room beauty and massage treatments. There’s no restaurant, but if you’re dying for a drink, there is an “honesty bar” in the lobby.
Rooms start at $76 per night.
ACME Hotel Company, Chicago, IL
This hip hotel in downtown Chicago focuses on including as many perks as possible for an affordable rate. Your room — which will have funky, fun decor — comes with free Wi-Fi, complimentary morning coffee, airport transfer, and access to the hotel gym and cocktail lounge. The vibe is a bit more hipster than luxury, but the amenities (and the proximity to the city's best shopping) will give your trip the edge you’re looking for. Plus, the hotel offers free use of Google Glass to guests so you can take your vacation high-tech.
Rooms start at $99 per night.
Hotel Not Hotel, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Hotel Not Hotel is both the coolest hotel you’ve been to, and a hotel unlike any you’ve ever seen (hence the name). Its rooms are eclectic, to say the least — nestled behind secret library bookcases or inside printed mini houses. Because of its unique design, the bathrooms are communal, but you likely won’t mind, since they are way nicer than that sounds. The best part? The hotel bar is called Kevin Bacon, because the proprietors “wanted it to be the Kevin Bacon of bars” and connect everyone together.
Rooms start at $79 per night and include Wi-Fi.
Siam Design Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand
In the busy metropolis of Bangkok, having a comfortable, zen spot to rest your head is key. This refined high-rise hotel offers four different room classes (so there are options for pretty much every traveler and every budget), along with excellent views of the city through its massive picture windows. There are also several bars and restaurants on the premises, a spa, and a rooftop swimming pool. It’s not in the most centrally located spot, but the atmosphere and service more than make up for it.
Rooms start at $89 per night.
The Dean, Providence, RI
Similar in tone to the Ace Hotels, The Dean is a funky industrial spot housed in a historic building in Rhode Island's capital city. Rooms vary in size, from queens to four-person bunk bed rooms that are anything but fratty. The decor is sparse, but incredibly tasteful, with details like a rain shower, signature bath products, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The Dean also has its own coffee shop, a restaurant called Faust, a cocktail lounge, and a karaoke bar where you can sip refined cocktails and show off your pipes before heading to bed.
Rooms start at $99 per night.
Mama Shelter, Paris, France
Paris has no dearth of cool hotels, but Mama Shelter, located in the newly hip 20th arrondissement, is one of its slickest, most stylish offerings. The rooms are basic but exceedingly well-designed, with everything you need packed into a compact space. Your booking includes free Wi-Fi, free movies on-demand, and a mounted iMac display that doubles as a TV and Skype device (so you can call your actual mama and brag about your trip). And if you like this particular hotel, Mama Shelter also has outposts in other cities, including Marseille, France and Los Angeles.
Rooms start at $123 per night.
Nu Hotel, Brooklyn, NY
While Williamsburg is now full of trendy boutique hotels, the downtown Brooklyn area was pretty sparse until the Nu Hotel came along, with its lofted rooms, cork floors, and complimentary bicycle rentals. The rooms, meant to resemble an artist's studio, feature thoughtful design elements like bathrooms with blackboards, vibrant Brooklyn-themed murals, and even a functional hammock hanging from the ceiling in the Urban Suite. Your stay includes Wi-Fi, breakfast, 24-hour access to the fitness center, and other assorted amenities. The hotel bar, Misdemeanor, serves specialty cocktails and light bites, with a sidewalk café that's prime for people-watching. Nu is also walking distance from the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Barclays Center, the Brooklyn Bridge, and some of the borough's most charming 'hoods.
Rooms start at $118 per night.
Ahau Tulum, Mexico
There's a huge variety of hotels in Mexico, particularly near the super popular area of Tulum. But if you don’t want to drop a bundle of money on your accommodations, check out Ahau Tulum, an eco-conscious beachside resort. The regular rooms are sometimes pricey, but the resort offers low-key “Bali Hut” rooms for less than $100 a night during the winter season. They're beachy, with thatched roofs, and there are tons of hammocks and chairs throughout the property, so all you have to do is choose one and set up shop. There's also daily yoga (for an additional fee), kiteboarding, and paddleboarding classes.
Rooms start at $92 per night.
