Is Taylor Swift's Hot-Pink Hair Another Countdown Clue?

$

0

Update: Taylor Swift gave us major unicorn vibes with her hot-pink hair at the iHeartRadio Music Awards last month — but unicorns aren't real, and Swift's color sure seems to be. The singer was spotted in New York City recently with her dip-dyed hair still going strong.

Swift has been busy on Instagram teasing a cryptic launch set to drop on 4/26. While we don't know what the singer has up her sleeve (could it be a fashion line? A new album?), we'll be not-so-patiently waiting to see if her pink hair sticks around for it.

This story was originally published March 15, 2019.

One of the life lessons Taylor Swift learned before turning 30 is that style is all about experimenting — and by the looks of her beauty choices at the iHeart Radio Music Awards, she's going all-in on trying new things for 2019.

The singer hit the red carpet last night in a multi-colored sequin romper, which she complemented with blue liner, voluminous lashes, and fuchsia lipstick. With her trademark fringe front and center and the rest of her hair pulled into ponytail, the look was classic Taylor from the front — but it was a hot-pink party in the back. Blink and you'll miss the sneaky neon color painted toward the end of her ponytail (or assume it's just a trick of the light).

Whether or not Swift is permanently joining the crew of celebrities rocking pink hair or just dabbled in wash-out color for the night, we can't say just yet; we reached out to her stylist for more information. Either way, we think this is one trend Swift won't look back on and cringe...

This Recycled Textiles Keds Collaboration Is Super Limited & Selling Out Fast

Over the years, Keds has provided a (literal) canvas for some of our favorite artists and designers — in recent memory alone, Kate Spade, Dusen Dusen and Alaina Marie have adorned the sturdy cotton uppers of these iconic tennis shoes. Their newest collaboration is unquestionably a work of art, but this time the focus is fabric: cult eco-conscious indie brand Ace & Jig has re-purposed excess, intricately crafted yardage from its collection of easy-to-wear, inclusively-sized women’s separates to create a group of brilliantly-hued trainers for the heritage sneaker brand.

Since its launch in 2010, Ace & Jig has quietly amassed a flock of superfans who prize the brand’s work-of-art cotton for its beauty and their everyday durability. “What they make is so special,” said Keds’ Global Creative Director Holly Curtis, who approached the company about working together last year, “but it can be worn every day.” Co-founders Jenna Wilson and Cary Vaughan travel to India biannually, where they’ve partnered with a family-run weaving enterprise in the country’s artisan-dense southern region to execute limited, seasonal batches of colorful and totally unique materials. “We like to say that we’re a textile love story,” says Wilson.

The brand is also relentless in its reduction of manufacturing waste; creating smaller objects out of remnants, sharing unused fabric with fellow designers, and cultivating a customer base that repairs and repurposes garments at events around the country. Despite the engineering challenges presented by using delicate loomed material and the comparatively low reserve of excess fabric, Keds decided that “the best way to honor what Ace & Jig is doing — and the relationship that they have with their consumer — was to use their exact textiles,” explained Curtis. After almost a year of testing and engineering, the result is a limited run of four cheery, crafty styles wrapped in signature prints; already sold out at Keds.com, but in plentiful supply (for now) online and in-store at Nordstrom.

Our best advice for shopping this collection? Run, don’t walk. “There’s a very engaged core audience that we are so lucky to have,” says Wilson, “and there’s a lot of excitement surrounding” the designs for Keds. Click through to see all of the textural, woven styles and good luck choosing just one. In the spirit of collaboration and re-purposing, we’ve added on a few extra shopping picks that make use of leftover fabrics.

Shorts season is as controversial as the Mac vs. PC debate — you either love them or hate them. We get why people choose a Mac over a PC, but when it comes to choosing shorts over pants, our reasons aren't quite so black and white. For one, there's the issue of length (there's nothing more uncomfortable than too-short shorts) and let’s not even get into the lack of options (it’s time to move beyond cut-offs).

Fortunately, after scouring every site from Mango to Shopbop, we discovered something: shorts aren’t half bad anymore. All of a sudden, there’s endless variety: quilted shorts, skorts, Bermudas, and more.

Before suffering through another summer in pants, take a peak at what this year’s selection of shorts has to offer. Ahead, we’ve rounded up the best shorts trends of 2019. Let the year of the short commence.

The 5 Nail Polish Colors Everyone Will Be Wearing This Summer

$

Maybe it's the new ruffle skirt hanging in your closet, or the fact that it's warm enough to walk down the street without a second layer, but we're all feeling serious summertime vibes. Despite the fact that we're still a few weeks ahead of Memorial Day, we're riding this warm-weather high early, with peep-toe sandals on our feet and a stack of colorful bracelets on one wrist — dangling down to the fresh, glossy manicure on our fingernails.

From a summery take on Coachella 's glitter manicure to the prettiest (and super-clean) stone-blue polish we've ever seen, we asked the pros for an inside look at 2019's hottest summer nail polish shades. Shop them all — or just your favorite bottle — right now, and consider it the cheapest accessory you'll buy, and wear on repeat, all summer long.

At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission.

Metallic Fuchsia

Smith & Cult's newest non-toxic shade combines two of the summer's biggest breakout trends — metallic and neon — in one gorgeous gold-capped glass bottle. Nail pro Emi Kudo tells us that the key to achieving an understated holographic mani is using a sheer, buildable polish with super-fine flecks of glitter, so the end result reads as a soft-glow shimmer.

Smith & Cult Smith & Cult Nail Polish in Palace in Wonderland, $18, available at Amazon

Sandy Bronze

Like a dewy body-bronzing oil in nail-polish form, Dior's newest summer shade is faintly shimmery and perfectly sun-kissed. Nail pro Jin Soon Choi confirms that this color, Sun Glow, is almost like the perfect airbrushed spray tan for your nails — minus the telltale color rub-off on the collar of your white T-shirt.

Dior Vernis Gel Shine & Long Wear Nail Lacquer in Sun Glow, $28, available at Nordstrom

Confetti Glitter

We're loving Essie's new silver confetti polish in Congrats for every rooftop party occasion from Memorial Day straight through September. Nail pro Skyy Hadley tells us that this shade in particular is kind of like the good vibes of spring and summer bottled up. "The multi-colored confetti makes your nails look as happy as you are," she says.

Essie essie Nail Polish in Congrats, $8.99, available at Target

Stone Blue

Target's nail-polish shelves just got a very trendy upgrade with the addition of Tenoverten's clean nail polishes. This soft blue feels perfect in the spring to summer transition because it's a little brighter than pastel, but more muted than electric neon. Moreover, Tenoverten founder Nadine Abramcyk tell us that the cool undertones in this shade make it just about universally flattering on everyone who tries it on.

Tenoverten Nail Polish in Austin, $12, available at Target

Baby Pink

A light-pink manicure feels so right for this time of year — it's essentially the nail polish version of a quick refresh between your trendy thumbnail art and rainbow gradient manicure. "Everyone needs a grab-and-go neutral sheer polish," says nail pro Michelle Saunders. That's precisely why we're wearing all of OPI's new bridal-inspired neutrals — like this pale pink from the Always Bare For You collection — on repeat, from this weekend's rooftop bar to that wedding in late August.

Spotted: Elizabeth Holmes Didn’t Wear A Black Turtleneck In Court

When Elizabeth Holmes got dressed for her court appearance on Monday, she stared at her closet full of black turtlenecks and thought to herself, I'll show them (probably).

Holmes' detractors have picked apart the fallen Silicon Valley CEO, criticizing everything from her natural hair color to her voice to what happened to her wolf, er, dog. And, over here at R29 Style, we were curious what message she was sending with her carefully calculated corporate fashion, specifically, her steady supply of black turtlenecks. Well now it appears, this Empress has a few new clothes after all.

Holmes appeared in court to face charges of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud wearing a light blue button-down shirt, gray slacks, and a gray blazer — no turtleneck in sight. This is the first time she has appeared in court since the release of the HBO documentary The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley which followed the rise and follow of her tech company, as well as her love of black turtlenecks.

Reportedly, Holmes was so obsessed with owning the exact Issey Miyake black turtleneck Steve Jobs wore in his iconic keynote presentations (and every other day of his working life) that she tracked down and stocked up on the pieces, which were reissued in 2017 for $270. Perhaps with this courtroom outfit, Holmes is signaling that she's finally changed her ways or at least her wardrobe.

At the hearing, the judge postponed her trial date until July 8 to offer up more time to review additional documents. According to ABC7, an estimated 20 million pages of documents are involved in this case, and the number could grow because of the judge allowing more time for review.

ABC7 is reporting Holmes and former Theranos president Ramesh Sunny Bulwani are facing 11 criminal counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Holmes and her attorneys were silent as they left the courthouse, ignoring questions. They are due back in court on June 10th for procedural matters.

7 Millennials Share How Their Lives Would Change If Their Student Loans Were Forgiven

On April 22, Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced a plan that has the power to dramatically alter the futures of countless Americans: student loan debt forgiveness.

Sen. Warren's latest proposal would cancel $50,000 in student loan debt for those with household incomes under $100,000. Individuals with a household income between $100,000 and $250,000 would still get some debt relief, with a cancelation amount of $1 for every $3 for incomes above $100,000.

This proposal comes as part of, arguably, the most comprehensive set of policies of any 2020 presidential hopeful thus far. Alongside progressive proposals addressing tax policy, the housing crisis, parental leave, and more, Warren is now setting her sights on alleviating the overwhelming debt currently saddling countless Americans.

Warren has spoken openly about the student loan debt crisis and how debt is negatively impacting millions of Americans today.

"Higher education opened a million doors for me. It’s how the daughter of a janitor in a small town in Oklahoma got to become a teacher, a law school professor, a U.S. Senator, and eventually, a candidate for President of the United States," Warren wrote in yesterday's announcement.

This policy has the potential to change millions of lives for the better — so it's worth asking: What would people's lives look like if this proposal came to fruition? We chatted with seven people who currently have student loan debt about how such a proposal might impact their lives and futures.

José María, 37, Puerto Rico

Current debt: $61,660
Job: Baker
Income: $8.50/hour

What would your life look like if your student loans were forgiven?

“I would feel overwhelmed to the point of tears [of] joy. I could breathe normally again! Suddenly, the ten years I've been paying $450 or $700 a month — without making a dent on the principal — would not be completely wasted in a hopeless endeavor.

“Working would be something that could provide wealth and goodness for my family, my society, and myself — not a chain of long hours to pay off a huge monthly figure set by a multimillion-dollar company. I could hopefully think about my family's future in terms of well-being. I could start a savings account to contemplate retirement later on in life. I could start a college fund for my kids so they don't have to do what I did to be able to pursue their passion via higher education.

"I could be a much better person [for] my wife, my kids, and my country... I could live, plan, and labor, being motivated by hope and by the growth I could see coming out of my labor, not by the fear of losing more than what I have already lost. I would sleep more than 4.5 hours a day. Stress would rarely visit. I would fix the house I live in, which sustained damage from a category 5 hurricane almost a year and a half ago [after which Puerto Rico was denied] basic aid. I would make plans to have a family vacation when my kid graduates from kindergarten. I would once again live with joy, optimism, and a renewed willingness and capability to help my fellow men and women.”

Eva, 27, California

Current debt: $36,000

Job: Social media manager and freelance writer

What would your life look like if your student loans were forgiven?

“Every time I log on to my student loan website and see a photo of a smiling student, it strikes me as terribly ironic. I currently owe around $36,000, a number that is suffocating and anxiety-inducing whenever I think about it.

“As a first-generation college student, I pursued my graduate degree because I loved school, but most importantly because I thought it would help me make more money when I entered the workforce. I also wanted to set an example for my nieces and nephews that they could do it, too (if they wanted). I think a lot about helping my family now and in the future, but it does feel like owing money on student loans makes this harder to do. It’s an added stressor.

“The idea of having my loans forgiven seems like an impossible one. I would feel an immense amount of gratitude. And I would immediately start to think of just where my usual $500 or more in payments a month would go instead. I’d love to help my single mom pay her mortgage, I’d love to help my nieces and nephews save for college, and one day I’d like to at least own a condo with my partner. I’m working toward these goals now, but it feels like an uphill climb with the amount of debt I’m in.”

Jayme, 31, Maryland

Current debt: $8,200

Job: Marketing manager

Income: $75,000

What would your life look like if your student loans were forgiven?

“When I was 22, I did a year of grad school for journalism right after college. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after undergrad, and our counseling center wasn’t much help in how to prepare you for a job after college, so I figured grad school would give me two years to figure it out. Long story short, my first year of grad school was miserable, and I couldn’t see myself continuing in the program, so I left school after a year.

"I have never once regretted my decision to leave that program; it wasn’t right for me. However, that one year left me $20,000 worth of student loan debt. I didn’t make a lot of money at entry-level positions in my 20s, and there were some months that I couldn’t afford to pay my monthly loan payment. It was either pay rent, or pay my student loans. To compensate for other financials (like eating and paying utilities), I racked up some credit card debt.

“I'm a 31-year-old single woman with a great job and the ability to make smart financial decisions, [so for] the last few years my student loans have been just an annoyance instead of something to cry about. I’m trying to buy a house now; my monthly payments of $350 would speed up that process if it were going to a down payment instead of my loans. I’m working hard to pay off my loans in the next year and a half, because I just want them done with, but if I didn’t have to pay them, I would be free to contribute to other goals I have.

“I’ve heard other student loan horror stories much worse than mine. Everyone has said that they feel the heavy burden of their loans and maybe would have made a different decision if they could go back. But education, and the right to the education that you want, shouldn’t be a burden, it should be a freedom.”

Alexandria, 29, California

Current debt: $93,161

Job: Substitute Teacher and Chef

Income: $21,600

What would your life look like if your student loans were forgiven?

“If my student loans were to be forgiven, I'd feel like a new person. I would take more chances with my career and creativity. My physical and mental health would most likely improve drastically.

“My student loans cause the majority of my stress and anxiety. My credit score took a huge hit when I wasn't able to pay my loans, so trying to rent an apartment is impossible. Having this debt is very restricting, especially when trying to improve my life and living conditions for myself and my family.

“If my loans were forgiven, I would feel happy, grateful, and free. I would be free to make decisions based on what I truly desire, instead of what seems to be the best in respect to accommodating my student loans."

Tasha, 33, Texas

Current Debt: $120,000

Job: Sales Executive

Income: $80,000

What would your life look like if your student loans were forgiven?

“My husband and I have a combined $180,000 in debt, including student loan, credit card, and car loan. A large percentage of that is student loans alone, with $120,000 being my personal student loan debt.

“If Warren could forgive student loan debt for individuals like me, this would change our lives drastically. Last year, my husband and I made the decision that I would put a pause on running my own business to pursue a career that would help us alleviate this debt faster. I had been in business on my own for almost a decade.

“It was a tough decision to pause what I loved doing to knock out debt more quickly, because I chose to pursue a degree when I was 17 that I'm still paying off. I love the current company I work for, but my husband and I have other dreams we want to fulfill, and it's not possible with all this debt hanging over our heads. Even if 25% of my student loan debt could be forgiven, that would change our lives, too.”

Alicia, 33, New York

Current debt: $25,000

Job: Deputy Press Secretary

Income: $65,000

What would your life look like if your student loans were forgiven?

"I spent the last 11 years under the weight of seemingly impermeable student loan debt. Graduating during the 2008 recession with an international studies degree in the Midwest saw me clawing for part-time, no-health-insurance work just to stay on top of my debt, at one point working five part-time jobs and still not making ends meet. After becoming ill and choosing to pay a doctor bill over a student loan, I defaulted and, unable to catch up, found myself with a charge-off, which affected my credit for the next seven years.

"If my remaining student loans were to be forgiven under a plan like Senator Warren's, despite my already wrecked credit, my future would look a lot more hopeful. While I am now thriving in a career that I love as a public servant, the dismissal of my student loan debt would put within reach things like a savings account, buying a house, or starting a family.

"When I took out my loans, I anticipated being able to pay them back in 10 years’ time. Since I have been out of school I’ve never not worked, yet I have barely made a dent in what I owe. The $500 I pay in loans each month would go a long way toward building a safety net for myself, but right now it feels like I am digging my grave with a spoon."

Michael, 24, Illinois

Current debt: $45,000

Job: Sports and Entertainment Publicist

What would your life look like if your student loans were forgiven?

"From a monetary standpoint, if my student loans were forgiven, I would be able to reallocate that money to my savings, invest in professional development, the stock market, and business ventures — as well as a retirement plan. Additionally, it would allow me to be more flexible with my budget month-to-month and provide some much-needed breathing room that would allow me to plan for things like emergency funds, dating, and vacations.

"From a mental-health perspective, my relationship with money and my family would change drastically. Going to a private college for five years and transitioning to the corporate world took a toll, because I went in with the understanding that the degree would make it possible to live the life I wanted. To graduate stuck with debt and a less-than-ideal starting salary makes me question the path I embarked on.

"The pressure during and after college was and is intense, because I'm a first-generation college graduate on my dad's side. My family sacrificed and invested so that I could attend college — AND there was a certain expectation that I would complete my education and bring in a certain level of income. I agreed to the loans before I had the financial literacy to know what I was signing.

"College grads are not looking for handouts, they are looking for help. For many, including myself, forgiving student loans would be a monumental action that would change the trajectory of my life and career."

I Tried Victoria Beckham's $1,038 Skin-Care Routine — & These Are The Results

$
0
0

I’ve always been intrigued by others' skin-care routines: the complex, the wild, the luxurious. Like an organized handbag or a monogrammed travel wallet, a good skin-care routine cries of having your shit together. In reality, my own skin-care routine is pretty basic: I have some beauty products I really love, but when it comes to what I apply, it depends on what mood I’m in and what's nearby.

For Victoria Beckham, however, there is no such lackadaisical approach to skin care. She is as diligent and dedicated to her routine as you would expect. I bet she has a monogrammed travel wallet.

According to Who What Wear, which recently published a full breakdown of VB’s morning and evening skin-care regimen, the designer follows a five-step morning routine and a six-step evening extravaganza — and it’s not cheap, with the products totaling over $1,000. Prescribed by Australian skin expert and facialist Melanie Grant, who Victoria has enthusiastically credited on Instagram for introducing her to some of her favorite beauty products, the routine includes serums, bespoke masks, and a facial cream that has been created by a professor who is an internationally recognized authority in regenerative sciences. No half measures here.

It got me thinking: Would replicating VB’s ultra luxe, multi-step regimen get my dull, dehydrated skin glowing? Would I finally learn to love a structured skin-care routine? Here's what happened in two weeks of trying out Beckham’s go-to products...

Day 1: AM

First up in the regimen is the Cosmedix Purity Solution Nourishing Oil ($35) a deeply cleansing mixture of argan, olive, and moringa oils, as well as melia azadirachta extract (also known as neem, which promises to purify and help reduce the appearance of redness due to dry skin). I massage a generous amount onto my skin before emulsifying with water and rinsing off. Victoria uses this cleansing oil morning and night. At first I'm unsure about using an oil so frequently (I have combination skin, but sometimes it verges more on the oily), but by the end of the two weeks it’s truly won me over and become one of my favorite products in the lineup. It really does melt away makeup, leaves skin feeling velvety soft, and smells divine.

The second step of the AM routine is the iS Clinical Pro-Heal Serum Advance Plus ($148), which contains all the good stuff: vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin A, and olive leaf extract. It certainly smells clinical, but sinks into the skin quickly and promises to help improve the appearance of blemish-prone, aging skin as well as helping reduce redness and inflammation due to cystic acne, rosacea, or scarring. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is reportedly also a fan.

Then it’s on to the eye cream. VB actually uses Cosmedix Eye Doctor, a high-potency "liquid crystal" serum, but I have a hard time tracking it down, so in its place I tried the Eye Genius ($70, as recommended by WWW). I’ve always struggled with finding an eye cream that’s not too heavy or too light and slippy, but this formula straddles it well. It’s both featherlight and creamy, and I notice a definite reduction in puffiness under the eyes.

The fourth step involves smoothing a couple of pumps of the most expensive beauty product I think I’ve ever used onto my face. Say hello to Augustinus Bader's The Cream ($265). Melanie Grant and Victoria are huge fans of this product, which also counts Alexa Chung, Margot Robbie, and Sandra Oh as enthusiasts. It comes with some pretty impressive credentials (as you might expect with that price tag): Professor Augustinus Bader, who holds over 200 patents, is one of the world's leading stem cell experts, developed a revolutionary hydrogel cream while treating burn victims, which eliminated the need for skin grafts in some patients.

I have to say, The Cream is pretty lovely — it sinks in and refreshes like a gel, but nourishes and hydrates like a cream without leaving a sticky residue. I don’t know whether it’s thanks to this cream, but my skin looks plumper and smoother within a few days.

Finally, there’s a slathering of Sarah Chapman Skinesis Skin Insurance SPF 30 ($69) to round off the morning routine. Victoria uses Melanie Grant's proprietary SPF, which isn't available to shop online yet, but I figure this formula is a solid bet since VB is a big fan of Sarah Chapman's products.

Day 1: PM

After using the Cosmedix Nourishing Oil to remove makeup and grime from the day, Victoria double cleanses with Cosmedix’s Purity Clean Exfoliating Cleanser ($39), which features lactic acid, tea tree oil, and peppermint oil to leave skin tingly and minty fresh. I’m impressed by how a pea-sized amount really does lather into the right quantity for the face and neck. It's not cheap, but at this rate, the bottle should last quite a while.

Next up is the Biologique Recherche Lotion P50. I have read a lot about this liquid exfoliant, another celebrity favorite that's supposed to brighten and leave skin feeling smooth, with an odd array of ingredients including horseradish and onion extract. There are four different lotions in the range, and an in-store or online "skin analysis" is required before you can get ahold of a bottle.

Following my analysis, I’m recommended the P50W ($67), the gentlest in the range. Victoria uses the P50, but because the line is so potent, it's better to work up to it. For the first two weeks, you’re advised to use a few drops of the lotion applied to a dampened cotton pad, patting across the face, neck, and décolleté (without rubbing or passing over the same area more than once). I’m equally terrified and excited to give this one a go. The first time I use it, I find the lotion quite astringent and notice some tingling, especially on areas where my skin is sensitive due to blemishes. After a few days, my skin adjusts to it and there isn’t too much discomfort, although I’m always glad to follow it up with a moisturizing serum.

Now, in comes the retinol, another product in the regimen that should be approached with care. Beckham uses the Cosmedix Serum 24, but that one is also tricky to track down; instead, I use the brand’s Serum 16 ($80). I’m advised to use this one to three times a week to start, switching to nightly use once my skin has adjusted.

After allowing the serum a few minutes to sink in and popping on some of the Eye Genius, I apply Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream ($265), which does exactly what it says on the bottle. It’s thicker and richer than The Cream I used in the morning routine, offers an almost shield-like layer — after applying it, I feel like I’ve locked in all the other hardworking skin products underneath for the night.

Day 2

I'm amazed by how smooth and soft my skin is feeling after just a couple of days. Of course, everyone's skin is different and simply copying a routine tailor-made for someone else doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the same results — but undeniably, my skin is already benefitting from a regular routine and some top products with clever ingredients.

Day 4

Uh oh. It was going so well, but I’ve been a bit heavy-handed with the retinol. After my night cleanse I notice a sorry-looking red patch on my cheek, along with a rather flushed face. Despite looking sore, it doesn't actually hurt, but I decide to pare it back a bit and take a few days' break from the most intense products: the Biologique Recherche Lotion and the retinol serum.

Day 4.

Day 7

I never knew plumper skin was something I was after, but these products are giving it to me and I am loving it. My face feels smoother and dry patches have been all but eliminated — plus, the redness from the overzealous retinol application has dissipated.

I’m also starting to see why so many beauty editors sing the praises of Sarah Chapman’s Skinesis range: The SPF 30 not only has a lovely light, smooth texture, but the formula is like a filter in a tube. I don’t know whether it’s the "smart light-scattering powders and an intelligent adaptive tint" but this cream really helps create a smooth base and gives me the confidence to go out without makeup, in a way I’d always wanted but not quite achieved without a sneaky bit of concealer first.

Day 7.

Day 14

As much as I am pleased with the effect of the products on my skin, I'm also amazed by my steadfast approach to this routine. Let's be honest: A daily skin-care routine that involves 11 steps is no small feat. To start with, it was quite time-consuming and there were some moments, especially after late nights, when double-cleansing was the last thing I fancied doing before hitting the hay. But as I've grown more comfortable with how and when to use the products, it's become a calming, nourishing part of my day and I'm getting much speedier. Also, the minutes I've added to my skin care have freed up time elsewhere: having smoother, glowing skin means I'm much more comfortable without makeup and when I do wear cosmetics they have a great base, so it's not such a stress-filled event. The products in Victoria's routine are certainly a luxury — but a key lesson here is the importance of getting yourself into a regular routine of looking after your skin, whether you're committing to 10 steps or two.

Anna Delvey Wore A White Sheer Dress For Her Final Court Date

Right now in popular culture, we're fascinated by women who seem to have gotten away with something. Whether it's Elizabeth Holmes fooling investors and the media, Anna Delvey claiming to be a German heiress, or Lori Loughlin's alleged college admissions scam, we can't stop looking at these women — and more specifically, what they are wearing.

Last Wednesday, Loughlin was photographed on her way to a court appearance in Boston. The actress, famous for her role on Full House as Aunt Becky and a slew of Hallmark Channel films, took the opportunity to sign autographs for fans outside the court house. She wore a light brown statement suit with a ribbed gray shirt and a pair of leather round-toe boots, topped with a pair of smart-looking eyeglasses.

Loughlin isn't the only famous woman championing a certain aesthetic for their court appearances. Early last week, alleged scammer Anna Sorokin (née Anna Delvey) was to appear in front of the New York Supreme Court but was a no-show — because she didn't have the right outfit. According to The Daily Beast, Delvey is working with former Glamour magazine editor Anastasia Walker to pull together looks for her courtroom appearances.

Her courtroom outfits have even inspired an Instagram account, Anna Delvey Court Looks, that's amassed over 3k followers. The comments range from support with "yes give them docile doll anna" to speculation about whether she is plotting on a new business venture. "Maybe she’s decided to wear it all the time to start a trend," one user wrote of Delvey's choker. "I could very easily see her serving her time and then getting actual investment for a legit business. [...] I think she expects to move past this," the person continued.

Not everyone is as impressed by Delvey's looks, particularly Judge Kiesel. Because Delvey's outfit had not been delivered to Rikers Island Prison, Delvey refused to come before the judge wearing the court-issued black pants and white shirt. “Either the clothes go to Rikers, or she shows up here in black and white,” Judge Kiesel said. “This is the last day we’re playing with clothes.”

Photo: TIMOTHY A. CLARY/AFP/Getty Images.

The courtroom outfit has long been a subject of fascination. Historically, defendants and plaintiffs alike wear muted, pared-down pieces of clothing to appear solemn in front of the judge and jury. Few courtroom looks have garnered the type of media attention that Lori and Anna now enjoy, except for Naomi Campbell's Azzedine Alaïa dress and Lindsay Lohan's manicure that was a literal Eff You to the judge. What does it say about our culture, and these women, that the courtroom outfit has become akin to a red carpet moment?

With the swarm of photographers, endless news coverage, and celebrity status afforded to defendants like Anna Delvey, it's not surprising that people are treating court appearances like red carpet moments. It's a way for celebrities to act as their own historians, turning every public moment into a photo opp, a headline, a chapter in their memoir, or a visual flashcard about their narrative which they want to control.

By diverting attention to their clothing, they're shifting the focus away from their (alleged) crimes and onto their exterior selves, their taste, and their access to money and luxury. Anna Delvey's fixation on what she wears — and her refusal to show up to court because of her outfit — is blatantly disrespectful to our legal system. And perhaps if Loughlin had spent more time reading her plea deals and less on what she was wearing, she wouldn't be facing more prison time.

Already, courtroom looks are inspiring press releases, Instagram accounts, and trend recaps. The question is ... how far will it go? Once people start using court appearances to promote their fashion lines, for example, we'll really be in trouble.

These Are The Best Memes Of 2019 So Far

A sloth walks into a bar mansion in pursuit of love with an affable virgin, and a girl holding a tray of Fiji water bottles captivates a nation with her smoldering smize. Kanye West holds a Sunday Service on a hill at Coachella, and it looks a lot like Teletubbies. These are just a few of the best memes of the year, and it's only April, people!

What will be this year's Blue/Black vs. White/Gold Dress or Laurel vs. Yanny? It's too soon to tell. But I'm calling it now: 2019 shall be a great year for memes.

Ahead, some of the best so far.

For those of us who are die-hard #TeamTormund.

Kanye's Coachella Sunday Service didn't not look like Teletubbies.

I mean, she dropped a surprise live album AND a documentary in one 24-hour period. A lot to take in.

Is self-care a love language in 2019?

An egg recently won the title of most-liked photo on Instagram, a title that, until recently, was held by Kylie Jenner for her photo announcing the birth of her daughter, Stormi Webster.

Yes, it's a lot to unpack. And we have a proposed theory: Could the Kardashians be behind said egg? A certain Kris Jenner, perhaps?

Perhaps the most important presence on The Golden Globes red carpet this year was that of Fiji Girl. The model's job was to hand out Fiji water bottles to stars on the carpet, and she wound up photobombing many of them whilst also serving lewks.

Let her story be an inspiration and reminder that all we need to do is find our light, and the rest will fall into place.

Oh, Sloth Girl. You didn't make it past Night One on The Bachelor, but we will never forget you. And you have been immortalized on the internet forever. Thank you for committing to your costume for the entirety of the episode.

Sometimes, what Marie Kondo teaches us about shirts can be applied to all aspects of life. Get rid of anything (read: anyone) in your life that does not spark joy for you!

If you were Sandra Bullock in Bird Box, what would it take for the entity to convince you to take off your blindfold? Harry Styles?

TFW Glenn Close eyes her competition for Best Actress at the Golden Globes.

Honorable mention: When Lady Gaga thought Rami Malek was her waiter.

When a video of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing on a rooftop made the rounds on the interwebs recently, conservatives tried to use it against her. It backfired...and only revealed AOC to be a good dancer!

Now there's a Twitter account pairing the video with a bunch of different songs, and it is everything.

We dare you not to feel motivated and affirmed by this glorious video by Dontè Colley.

This Pluto Retrograde, It’s Time To Face Your Shadow Self

$
0
0

Although Pluto has been demoted to a "dwarf planet" in astronomy, it still plays a big role in astrology as the ruling planet of Scorpio and the planet of transformation. Pluto retrograde begins on April 24 — but don’t freak out. Pluto spends about half the year in retrograde, and this retrograde will continue until October 3. So unlike Mercury retrograde, Pluto retrograde probably won’t send your life into chaos… unless you haven’t dealt with your “shadow” (cue the two Lupita Nyong’os in Us).

“Unlike Mercury retrograde’s effects (which manifest as external forces), Pluto retrograde affects us on a subconscious level,” explains Narayana Montúfar, managing editor of horoscopes for Horoscope.com. “Each year, when Pluto retrogrades, we are given an opportunity to dive beneath the surface to encounter — and deal — with our darkest psychic material. We are not being asked, but pushed to search and destroy whatever is blocking our personal growth.”

As for the effects of Pluto retrograde, she adds, “Will it wreak havoc on our lives? It depends on how much each one of us has dealt with their own shadow material. Basically, if you have done the work, you will probably be okay. If you have not, you might be in for a ride!” This means that “the best thing you can do is face your dark side. Whether it means getting closure on an old issue, opening up about your darkest secrets, doing healing work, going to therapy… deal with it — or it will deal with you.”

Pluto is in the sign of Capricorn — which means desires, both sexual and not, will resurface. “The sea-goat, while practical by nature, is an undercover freak in the sheets,” explains astrologer Lisa Stardust. “Desires will be reawakened, as we are exploring past fantasies. Some may decide to manifest power, while others will opt to add kink to their stale routine. Pluto rules the underworld, often allowing us the option to embrace our devilish delights. During a planetary backspin, we can bring growth to areas where we are unsatisfied — relationships, sex, money, and work. Allowing oneself the chance to transform and awaken old yearnings will help soften the Plutonian energy.”

Make sure you don’t get in any love triangles, though. “The only thing to avoid is power struggles and triangular relationships, as these may cause more drama than necessary,” Stardust adds. “Creating balance and purging oneself of psychic drains will unleash past constraints that hold us back during this metamorphic transit.”

Astrologer Jessica Lanyadoo notes that Pluto retrograde will especially affect people who have a planet in their birth chart in a position in which Pluto will transit that planet. "If Pluto is hitting your chart in a way that either gives you a positive or easy transit or a more challenging transit, then you’re really going to feel Pluto’s retrograde," she explains. "If you're not getting a transit by Pluto, you’re not necessarily going to notice it."

However, Lanyadoo adds, “retrogrades are always a good time to review and reflect” for everyone. “Pluto is about transformation and profound developments,” she says. “When we experience Pluto, we’re being asked to go deep and confront something that’s really difficult to confront. So maybe something we have shame around or something that is taboo.”

Right now, Pluto and Saturn are very close to each other in the sign of Capricorn, creating a conjunction — something that hasn’t happened since 1518. “It’s quite rare, and it is a really big deal,” Lanyadoo says. “Pluto being so close to Saturn, and both of them being in the sign of Capricorn, directly implicates global events that we’re seeing,” such as climate change. “On a personal level, it makes it so that each of us as individuals is more personally confronted by what it means to be part of a society,” she explains.

That means that “this is not a good time to try to keep things on the surface and keep things light,” Lanyadoo says. Instead, it’s a time “to take responsibility for the work you’re doing, and how you’re connected to other people, and what it all means. To distill it to a more personal level, that means taking responsibility for the language you use, making sure your language isn’t ableist or racist or homophobic. And on an even more personal level, I think that people really need to look at the ways they’re living on a day-to-day and really acknowledge whether it’s serving their mental health and their physical health, and to start to unpack that so they can make different choices.”

Gigi Hadid Just Tried The Grooviest Nail-Art Trend Of 2019

$
0
0

From cow nails and heart-embellished to chic, understated ombré, this year is already rife with inventive new nail-art trends. But for all the Summer-ready designs and negative-space French tips out there, there's one other bold look in particular we've got our eyes on right now — and it's very 1969-meets-1999-meets-2019.

Tie-dye designs might conjure up images of Janis Joplin in a technicolor dress at Woodstock, or maybe the fluorescent tees we all wore to play mandatory sports in middle school. Translate that pattern to nails, however, and it stops feeling decade-specific and starts looking decidedly modern. Even Gigi Hadid took the nostalgic pattern for a spin ahead of her 24th birthday.

The actual process requires a little more finesse than vats of dye and rubber bands: Artists are recreating the effect by carefully painting nail polish onto the nail in individual swirls, then pulling a striping brush through the center before the polish dries to create the spiral effect. Tie-dye has always been about that imperfect homespun finish — but if you can't quite nail it, there's no shame in bringing along the inspiration photos ahead next time you head to the salon. It's all groovy, baby.

Celebrity nail artist Mar y Sol took the tie-dye trend to the next level by adding it as an accent in this neon manicure.

Mei Kawajiri gave Gigi Hadid multicolored tie-dye designs to ring in her 24th birthday.

South Korean nail-artist trailblazer Park Eunkyung of Unistella is one Instagram-favorite manicurist spearheading the trend. Eunkyung ditched pastels and metallics for neon shades in pink, yellow, green and blue, fashioned into a psychedelic swirl and printed onto classic almond-shaped nails.

For an elegant, deconstructed take on tie-dye, consider incorporating a stripe on otherwise neutral nails.

Coffin nails aren't going anywhere fast, according to Instagram nail artist Hannah Schewel, who combined tie-dye with a calligraphy font, a trend that London manicurist Ami Streets already predicted will be huge this year.

If you aren't feeling a whole nail, California-based nail artist Julie Ventura makes a case for the negative space vibe, with a single tie-dye strip down the center. The tie-dye effect looks just as good on short, natural nails as it does on longer acrylics.

A matte top coat creates a dry, dusty finish that pairs perfectly with a sunset-inspired color scheme.

Spectating While Black: 5 Black Women Share Their Concert Experiences

Festival season is officially upon us. As music lovers recover from Coachella, flock to Broccoli City, Something in the Water, Made In America and everything in between, there’s no doubt they’ll be enjoying performances from artists in the country’s most popular genre: hip hop and R&B. But what happens when Black people try to enjoy the culture that they helped make mainstream? For Black women, it can be a harrowing experience.

I remember the rage I felt the first time I heard a white woman rap along with French Montana using the N-Word. Or the time I almost got into a fight with another white woman at Coachella who was loudly saying the N-Word repeatedly. I felt anger. I felt betrayed. And I felt like I wasted my money. As it turns out, what felt like an incredibly isolating experience was one that I shared with other Black women. Below, we share the stories of five Black women who were surrounded by white people at a Black artist’s concert.

Invading my safe space

I was at Beyoncé’s historic Coachella performance in 2018. It was my second time at the music festival. My dad went to North Carolina A&T, a historically black university. So immediately, I was familiar with the show’s inspiration. The performance felt intensely personal and empowering for me, but it was disheartening to see how many people didn’t know the Black National Anthem, or how to swag surf. I felt like there were two shows happening: one for the people who understood the symbolism, and one for those who were just there to observe. Beyoncé created a safe space for me, and I felt like the crowd was invading it. It was in that moment that I realized so many people have no idea what Black people experience daily.

When I was leaving the show, I almost got in a fight with a white woman who refused to move out of my way after I said excuse me. Since she wouldn’t move, I politely stepped around her and she shoved me in the back. There was a defiance to it. It triggered me because it represented everything I experience as a Black woman on a daily basis. I was just not having it. — Amber Kai, Casting Director in Los Angeles

I feel invisible

I live in the San Fran area and when I go to concerts here, it’s almost as if I’m invisible.

When I found out Miguel was performing on New Year’s Eve 2018, my boyfriend (who is half Vietnamese, half white) and I got tickets. The day of the show, Fort Mason, a huge venue out on the San Francisco Bay, was packed. I was expecting to see a few more Black people at the show, despite the gentrification in the Bay Area. But most of the people at the concert were not Black.

Once the opening acts took the stage, everyone just let loose. It didn’t matter if they were saying the N-Word. They did not care. From what I could tell, I was the only Black person around. And I felt almost as if I was validating their presence. It was really uncomfortable. I was tired of people acting like they didn’t see me. Stepping in front of me, on my feet. Shoving me; flipping their hair in my face; hitting me with a bag.

It just boggles my mind how even when you think you can let your guard down at a concert, you can’t. It’s sad that some white people have taken over Black music and Black culture, without respecting boundaries and personal space. — Amber Richele, Influencer in San Francisco

Struggling to stay present

I was at the Solange concert at Radio City Music Hall in 2017. And although there were more Black people than white people in the audience, I felt like I couldn’t fully be in the moment. I constantly felt myself looking to see how the non-Black people around me were reacting to certain lyrics. I had to remind myself to be fully immersed in the moment: a performance of an album [A Seat At the Table] created for Black women. However, I still felt overly aware of whiteness in the space.

At one point during the show, I told myself to be present. I paid a lot of money for these tickets, and so did everyone else. It was just a reminder of the lack of opportunities Black women have to fully take up space. — Diana C, HR Associate in New York City

Sweat ya hair out and act out. 🍾

A post shared by RAVEN B. (@theglogoddess) on

Rae Sremmurd dropped SremmLife 2 in 2016, and I had tickets to the concert at Playstation Theater in Times Square. The concert was general admission, and unfortunately, my friend and I got there late. By the time we finally made our way inside and as close to the stage as we could, we missed the first three openers. People were getting more intoxicated, and doing more drugs, and I could feel things becoming more contentious, especially because it was standing room only.

Suddenly, I felt someone grabbing my hair repeatedly. At first, I ignored it, thinking maybe she was dancing in a tight space. But then it became clear that she was doing it on purpose. I was wearing a blonde wig, and it was starting to lift. In a strange effort to diffuse the situation, the white man she was with started yelling at me. A security guard came over, and thank God she was a Black woman. She stopped the confrontation. But if she weren’t Black, I’m not sure I wouldn’t have gotten escorted out.

I hate that now when I attend concerts, I make sure that everything on my body is secured. — Raven B, Associate Social Media Editor in New York City

Are you laughing at us, or with us?

Dave Chappelle did a series of concerts and comedy shows with musicians a few years ago. So I went to one with my friend from graduate school, who is white. I was sitting down while my friend went to get a glass of wine, and when he came back the white people on the other side moved over. It was such a small stupid thing, but the assumption that this person wouldn’t be with me, even though there was an empty seat next to me, was bothersome. And that was very early in the concert.

As the show started, I just remember [my white friend] laughing loudly and enthusiastically about some of the jokes. And I remember feeling like are you laughing with us or at us? I automatically thought you must be laughing at us, because you don’t have this specific experience. And I thought to myself I don’t know why I decided to come to this concert with you. I just let it go, because it didn’t feel like it was worth talking about. There was a part of me that didn’t want to know what he was laughing at. I was like man, this is a good concert. So I just left it alone.

I think that’s just the Black experience in America, right? It’s a constant internal conversation with yourself: I deserve to be here. I’m not going to let this nonsense ruin my time, ruin my mood, ruin my self esteem. It’s automatic, but it’s exhausting. — Patia B, Health Editor in New York City.

Judge Judy Changed Her Hair — & Fans Are Freaking Out

Oprah Winfrey. Judge Judy. Mr. Feeny. These are just some of the people who made after-school TV absolutely essential viewing. Whether you just had a crushing altercation with your middle-school crush or generally felt overwhelmed by adolescence, you could switch to a basic cable channel after 3 p.m. and — rest assured — one of these personalities would be there, giving life advice — or, in Judy's case, just screaming.

For the past 22 years on air, Judge Judy has rocked the same iconic look: brown hair with caramel highlights styled into a short bob. But no more. This spring, Judge Judy, much like Bella Hadid and Camila Mendes, decided to embrace a brand-new look.

Gone is that mop of brown hair. On Monday's episode, the 76-year-old judge (whose real name is Judy Sheindlin) appeared with a... wait for it... ponytail. Her hair was pulled back with a barrette, and viewers, as you can imagine, were shook to their core.

Why has she gone and done this now, more than two decades into her TV career? Judge Judy has yet to make an official statement, but as one Twitter user noted, it does look an awful lot like Ruth Bader Ginsburg 's go-to 'do.

Is this a case of icon recognizing icon? Legend recognizing legend?

After doing some digging, we did find that this style isn't exactly new. While this episode just caught people's attention yesterday, Judy's bailiff, Petri Hawkins Byrd, posted an Instagram of Judy's new hair back in February with the caption, "Change is good."

And we agree that change looks good on Judge Judy. Regardless of inspiration, we have to say that Judy is right on-trend with that stylish barrette. And for someone as iconic as Judy, we wouldn't expect anything less.
