The Empire State is home turf for front-runner Trump. The real estate mogul’s signature edifice, Trump Tower, stands in New York City, and he has long called the city home. In an early debate, Trump and opponent Ted Cruz got into a tiff over Trump’s alleged “New York values,” as Cruz painted the city as inherently liberal. Residents and New York-based media did not take kindly to the insinuations.
As of Tuesday afternoon, FiveThirtyEight gave Trump a 99% chance of winning his home state. According to the site's weighted average of polls, Trump is currently polling at 52% in New York, compared to Kasich’s 21% and Cruz’s 17%.
Unlike many of the recent Republican primaries, New York is not a winner-take-all state, meaning the delegates will be allocated proportionately. However, even a sweep of the state's 95 delegates wouldn’t allow Cruz or Kasich to catch up to Trump. Trump currently leads the race with 743 delegates, compared to Cruz’s 543 and Kasich’s 144. A candidate must win 1,237 delegates to claim the nomination outright and avoid a contested convention.
Polls in the state begin closing at 9 p.m. EDT, and we’ll be updating here with the expected winner as it becomes clear. Ahead, catch up on the results from contests held so far. And be sure to check back to see which candidate emerges the winner of the day.
