With 291 delegates to take away on the Democratic side, both Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are touting their connections to the Empire State.
Both Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have ties to the state. Sanders, who has long served Vermont in Congress, is Brooklyn-born and raised. Clinton, for her part, represented the state as senator for eight years. Both candidates have been campaigning heavily in New York, holding multiple rallies and events. Last Thursday, the Democratic rivals met up for an aggressive last-minute debate in Brooklyn, in which they argued over gun policy, the public release of tax returns, paid speech transcripts, and the Iraq War.
At the moment, Clinton leads Sanders 1,307 delegates to 1,094 delegates. Both candidates are more or less halfway to the magic number of 2,383 — the amount needed to secure the nomination. The slimming discrepancy means that a strong Sanders performance could close the gap between the candidates, but a win for Clinton could widen her lead. As of Tuesday morning, FiveThirtyEight gave Clinton a 99% chance of winning New York.
Polls in the state begin closing at 9 p.m. EDT, and we’ll be updating here with the expected winner as it becomes clear. Ahead, catch up on the results from contests held so far. And be sure to check back to see which candidate emerges the winner of the day.
